Queen Elizabeth II to step back from public engagements

Queen Elizabeth II is stepping back from public engagements due to her late age and health, resulting in a gradual changing of the guard at the helm of the British royal family.

Charles, Prince of Wales, the 95-year-old monarch's eldest son and heir, has been shouldering more of the load of official obligations for some years, especially overseas.

However, his wife, Camilla, is increasingly joining the fray, both online during the coronavirus pandemic limitations last year and in person now that the limits have been lifted.

The pair will be joined by Charles' eldest son, William, and his wife, Kate, from his previous marriage to Princess Diana.

As a result, they have gotten a larger portion of the media attention that would have gone to the queen, who has been told by doctors to take it easy.

Their attendance at events, such as the world premiere of the latest James Bond film and meetings with world leaders at the G7 and UN climate summits, is a strong indication of impending change.

Majesty Magazine's managing editor, Joe Little, told AFP that their prominence "will accelerate in the fullness of time."

"However, a lot of people are now aware of Camilla and are learning about her," he added.
