Pakistani singer Arooj Aftab nominated for Grammy's best new artist award

Arooj Aftab is the first Pakistani to be nominated for a Grammy Award in the best new artist category for the year 2021.

Aftab has lived in the United States for nearly two decades and was featured on former US President Barack Obama's summer playlist earlier this year.

The 64th annual Grammy Awards nominations were released on Tuesday night, and the star-studded show will take place on January 31 in Los Angeles.

Apart from Pakistani artists, this category has been nominated for singer Jimmie Allen, American singer-songwriter Olivia Rodrigo, rapper Saweetie, rapper Baby Keem, singer Finneas, British band Glass Animals, Korean-American indie rock group Japanese Breakfast, Australian breakout star The Kid Laroi, and British singer Arlo Parks.

She was also nominated for Best International Performance.

In 2018, the 36-year-old gained news when her "Lullaby" was named one of the 200 Greatest Songs by 21st Century Women+ by NPR, and her "Island No 2" was named one of the Best Classical Music Tracks of 2018 by the New York Times.
